In December, Eurasian political coordination intensified amid parallel efforts to diversify external partnerships. The first-ever C5+1 summit hosted in Tokyo underscored Central Asian states’ growing engagement beyond Russia, even as Moscow convened an expanded Eurasian Intergovernmental Council to reinforce economic integration with EAEU members and other partners. In Kyrgyzstan, snap parliamentary elections consolidated pro-Japarov forces but showcased widespread vote buying and legal challenges. Separately, the Constitutional Court blocked the President’s proposal to reinstate the death penalty. Across the region, energy shortages, water stress, and labor coordination initiatives highlighted mounting structural pressures requiring cross-border management.
