A suicide vehicle bombing and armed assault struck the Kohat Police Lines compound in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, on September 18, when an explosives-laden vehicle rammed the compound gate during Friday prayers at a mosque inside the perimeter. At least 21 people, including 15 police officials, were killed and more than 80 others wounded, three critically, according to District Health Officer Dr. Nasir Hassan Afridi. The toll is subject to ongoing updates with local sources expecting a rise in fatalities.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Inspector General Zulfiqar Hameed said seven attackers attempted to infiltrate the compound following the initial blast, exchanging fire with police and Counter Terrorism Department personnel. Several were neutralized near the CTD building, while a second suicide bomber detonated near the Special Branch building during the exchange. By approximately 3:30pm, six of the seven attackers had been killed and the clearance operation was in its final stages. The Hafiz Gul Bahadur-led Ittehadul Mujahideen has claimed the attack, a claim not yet independently confirmed by a second outlet.

The attack fits an active pattern rather than an isolated incident. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police recorded 194 militant attacks against police posts and personnel in the first quarter of 2026 alone, with 59 officers killed over the same period. A roadside bomb killed six soldiers in neighboring Hangu district on September 17, one day before this attack, and security forces reported killing 10 militants in North Waziristan and Hangu the same day.
