Report Summary
This report examines the current geopolitical and security environment in the MENA region. Tensions around Israel are rising once again over accusations between Israeli, Hamas, Lebanese and Egyptian officials over non-compliance with the ceasefire agreements, as well as continued Israeli raids in the West Bank. Tensions are set to rise further amidst renewed threats by Iran towards launching a new missile attack.
Through it all, diplomatic efforts to resolve the region’s many crises continue. Egypt announced it is working on its own proposal for Gaza. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia displayed its regional diplomatic clout when it hosted talks towards resolving the conflict in Ukraine. In Iraq, a Turkish delegation met with the PKK as Ankara embarks on a new peace process to put an end to the country’s long-standing insurgency.
Despite the many challenges gripping the region, regional economies, particularly in the Gulf, show positive signs of resilience and stability. Syria’s new government, meanwhile, appears to be making gains towards sanctions relief, which would enable for equitable reconstruction in the country as its economy works to recover from its decade-long civil war.
