Global Summary
The week of April 26 to May 1 ended with three simultaneous crises accelerating rather than resolving. The US-Iran ceasefire survived its 60-day War Powers Act deadline after the White House claimed hostilities had "legally ended," but Brent crude surged from $107 to $126 per barrel as Iran's new Supreme Leader declared a US "shameful defeat" and the Strait of Hormuz remained closed; the IEA chief called it the "biggest energy crisis in history." In Mali, JNIM jihadists launched a nationwide call for a united front to topple the junta, announced road blockades toward Bamako, and forced Russia's Africa Corps to withdraw from Kidal following the assassination of Defense Minister Sadio Camara; junta leader Goita declared a 72-hour citywide curfew and acknowledged "extreme gravity." In Colombia, FARC dissident groups killed 21 people near Cajibio on April 26 in the worst single attack ahead of the May 31 presidential election. South Korea sentenced former President Yoon Suk-yeol to seven years in prison on April 29 for his December 2024 martial law imposition, and Armenia announced the suspension of its CSTO membership ahead of the May 4 European Political Community summit in Yerevan.
