SITUATION SUMMARY

Clashes erupted along the Thailand-Cambodia border on July 24, marking the worst escalation between the two countries in over a decade. The fighting began after a Thai soldier lost a leg to a land mine in a disputed zone, prompting Bangkok to expel Cambodia’s ambassador and launch retaliatory airstrikes. Heavy artillery, rockets, and small arms fire were exchanged across at least six locations, including near the historic Ta Muen Thom and Preah Vihear temples.

Thai authorities report at least 20 deaths, mostly civilians, including children, and dozens more injured. Cambodia confirmed one soldier killed and accused Thailand of using cluster munitions and bombing near the UNESCO-designated Preah Vihear temple. Both sides blame the other for initiating hostilities, each claiming self-defense.

More than 150,000 people have reportedly been displaced on both sides of the Thai-Cambodian border, prompting Thailand to shut down all northeastern border crossings. The UN Security Council convened an emergency meeting on July 25, while regional powers and international actors urged de-escalation. The border conflict, rooted in longstanding sovereignty disputes, now risks broader regional instability within Southeast Asia.
