SITUATION SUMMARY

On 27 January 2025, M23 rebels seized Goma, DRC’s largest city and a vital economic hub, resulting in over 900 deaths in just two weeks and widespread looting of humanitarian supplies. Additionally, diplomatic tensions have escalated, with allegations of Rwandan support for the rebels and stalled peace talks. The rebel advance, including the capture of Nyabibwe, underscores the deepening security crisis in the region.
